RELEASE: World Press Freedom Day Statement 2020
The role and significance of media is evident now more than ever as the world faces an existential crisis. Journalists across the world have stepped up to the challenge of ensuring the public is provided information that could save their lives.
In some countries, journalists are sacrificing their own lives to get the stories. In other countries, journalists have been attacked for asking authorities to provide more relevant information for the public. We salute all journalists who are selflessly ensuring that people stay informed.
With this year’s theme, “Without Fear or Favour”, we are reminded of the challenges our region faces with regards to Freedom of and Access to Information. Current laws hinder transparency, accountability and investigative journalism. The refusal by various governments to share and publish data remains a major problem.
Information is key and influences policy change in many positive ways. The free flow of information, timely reporting and provision of data by government institutions can help our societies nurture the democratic process.
It is our hope that there will be collaboration and discussion between governments and regional media associations with regards to legislative changes.
